With the ever changing way people look at entertainment, movies, videos, surfing the web, game playing and TV shows, we are looking for better solutions and yet keep the cost down. So I am researching some different items to see which fits the better idea. I am comparing Apple TV, the Roku and XBMC Media Center for the family home entertainment.
One of the biggest challenges is the local channels desired. Apple TV has several business pluses, home network support and music support. Where the Roku has more video, movie and tv options. The XBMC Media Center is giving several of the mixture of both parties. As far as base cost for each unit you are in the $100.00 market for the Apple TV and Roku units XBMC base unit around $300.00.
In my reseach I was able to find out a Good friend of my already had a roku and was happy to share the findings with me. One of the items is how many different accounts you have to signup for some are paid accounts and some are free. How hard it can be to search on the unit for what you are wanting (Sports Games, Movies). It was easier to search on a computer then go directly to the item wanted on the unit. Now I want to note it was not the latest model you can get today. But it still allowed us to test.
My next test is the XBMC with a live CD on a three year old computer and HDMI output video card and N wireless card.
Working on getting the Apple TV unit during the testing of the above.
